!!! (Chk Chk Chk) - Strange Weather, Isn't It? ? (Warp Records)
This album is energeticly calming, at times oozing pop disco flair, apparently heavily influenced by Iggy Pop, David Bowie and Depeche Mode. "...it remains seductive and sophisticated, but with a gritty edge that takes the listener into dark corners of excess".
Kyle Andrews - Kangaroo (Elephant Lady Records)
What a sweet, dreamy sounding voice Kyle Andrews has, creating this entire album from his bedroom. He mostly sings about love and longing but in a catchy, quirky, and adorable way that makes you want to sing along with him.
Bear in Heaven - Beast Rest Forth Mouth Remixed (Hometapes)
Contains progressively entrancing rhythms over laid by Royksopp sounding voices. These rhythms do not lie flat and shallow they pop with vibrancy and quickly gain intricacy as the song flows along. This album is beautifully epic and worth a listen. Sounds like: Yeasayer, Deerhunter
Dreamend - So I Ate Myself Bite by Bite (Graveface Records)
The lyrics in this album speak of crime juxtaposed with upbeat rhythms. "Dreamend diverges from the synth-pop of Black Moth Super Rainbow to take on a nightmarish folk sound that evokes the faded scenery of ghost towns and eerie midnight drives" but do not fear this album is not a bad dream, but an intricate one. It is very catchy heavy with banjos, bells, guitars, organs, and enchanting vocals.
Buke & Gass - Riposte (Brassland)
This Brookyln-based duo compose their songs with homemade instruments, Arone Dyer playing a six-string "buke" baritone ukulele, while Aron Sanchez strums along on a "gass" being a guitar-bass hybrid. Arone and Aron take musical multi-tasking to an entirely new level also using "various pedals, amplifiers and homemade inventions". Sumed up as beautiful, melodic noise.
Fitz and the Tantrums - Pickin' up the Pieces (Dangerbird Records)
This album is freshly, soulful and funky. The lyrics are realisticly uplifting, and soul clenching, and instantly relatable from the prospective of a lover or lost love, accompanied by flutes, drums, pianos, handclaps, tamborines, and french men.
Sounds like: Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Black Joe Lewis, Mark Ronson
Ra Ra Riot - The Orchard (Barsuk Records)
Being their sophmore record the title comes from recording it at a peach orchard in Penn Yan, NY. And rightfully so seeing that this album is beautifully sweet and juicy! Bursting with catchy bass rhtyhm and infectious lyrics, "...melding taut rhythms with lush chamber pop, subtle psychedelia".
Tu Fawning - Hearts on Hold ? (Provenance Records)
This album reminds me of cross betweeen "Godspeed You Black Emperor" and "Portishead" gloomingly hauting and marchy. But more multi-faceted in its own respects accompanied by bruding piano melodies and droning but uptempo lyrics. This album is far from one dimensional.
Camu Tao - King of Hearts (Fat Possum Records)
Camu Tao a "legendary MC, producer, and singer, whose life was tragically cut short on May 25th, 2008 after a protracted battle with lung cancer, will have his debut solo album and final statement, King of Hearts, posthumously released as a collaborative release between Fat Possum Records and Definitive Jux". Reminding me of colligate hip-hop with an RPM flavour fills its listeners with a playful and deeply introspectivly thoughtful feeling. The tracks on this record deserve multiple listens, delving deeper into his lyrics and meaning.
