Bonnie 'Prince' Billiy & The Cairo Gang - The Wonder Show Of The World [Drag City]
Voice and guitar and bass making music lightly and freshly. 2 dudes, mostly. Some beautiful packaging on this.
Manual - Drowned In Light [Darla]
Really cool! Think: my bloody valentine, M83, Cocteau Twins...but FRESH and lively. Almost a little new-age, but don't let that scare you.
Mark Sultan - $ [Last Gang]
BBQ of The King Khan & BBQ show's second record under his given name. Truly a living legend of the rocknroll scene of the last 20 years along with his regal compatriot.
Growing - Pumps! [Vice]
New record by these dudes who have grown into a sliced-up minimal-techdrone trio from a blissed-out heavy drone duo.
Nice Nice - Extra Wow [Warp]
This record is about rocking really hard constantly forever. Hard like, Boredoms meets Ravi Shankar meets Led Zeppelin.
Kaki King - Junior [Rounder]
Possibly the most famous avant-garde female guitarist in the world further turns up the pop on this one. Sick parental advisory sticker.
Black Francis - Nonstoperotik [Cooking Vinyl]
Mr Charles Frank Black Francis Thompson records an album mostly about doing it.
Harlem - Hippies [Matador]
Heir-apparent, or perhaps brethren, to the sloppy garage punk currently ruled by Black Lips.
The Tallest Man On Earth - The Wild Hunt [Dead Oceans]
Apparently it is OK to call this dude the "Next Dylan."
Jonsi - Go [XL]
Sigur Ros front-bro playing music that probably sounds a little like Sigur Ros, but more fun.
Roky Erickson with Okkervil River - True Love Cast Out All Evil [Anti-]
Perhaps the "godfather of psychedelic rock" teaming up with indie vets Okkervil River for his first record of new material in a long time. Kind of like the psychrock Daniel Johnston, to be so crass.
Matt Pond PA - The Dark Leaves [Altitude]
If Matt Pond had a PA, it would be Matt Pond's PA.
Disappears - Lux [Kranky]
Heavy, stomping garage rock not unlike The Ponys, but with that special "kranky" feel. Kind of like Deerhunter's more rocknrollin numbers. Solid!
In Tall Buildings - In Tall Buildings [Whistler]
Member of NOMO, Saturday Looks Good To Me, and His Name Is Alive (what credentials!!) records solo records solo. Very solid music that is not void of sounds associated with his other bands.
EXPERIMENTAL
Harold Budd & Clive Wright - Little Windows [Darla]
Brian Eno-y technicolor drones and piano pieces. Beautiful!
The Nels Cline Singers - Initiate [Cryptogramaphone]
This album's art is solely photographs of the Large Haldron Collider. That should speak for itself.
ALT. COUNTRY
Black Prairie - Feast Of The Hunters' Moon [Sugar Hill]
A bunch of those Decemberists team up with some other like-minded folks and produce this fun album of stompy folk and feeling. Playing the "Stagecoach" festival that's put on by the folks who do Coachella, which must mark time someone who has performed on a Coachella stage (Decemberists) has also appeared on the Stagecoach stage.
WORLD
Meklit Hadero - On A Day Like This... [Porto Franco]
Really fun and nice worldly music from this Ethiopia-via-San Francsico guitarist and singer. No pretension and good songwriting.
VINYL
Japandroids - Art Czars b/w Racer X 7" [Polyvinyl]
Slice o wax featuring a jam on the A and a Big Black cover on the B.
