Dr. Dog - Shame, Shame [Anti-]
This little indie-roots-rock band that could has slowly and steadily travelled the roads of indie-rock-dom to this ostensible climax.
Caetano Veloso - Zii e Zie [Nonesuch]
Undisputed king of Brazilian guitar music, here with a new record of spunky and somber ballads and party jams.
Rafter - Animal Feelings [Asthmatic Kitty]
San Diegan producer extraordinaire returns with another slice of funky pop'n'b.
Burning Star Core - Papercuts Theater [No Quarter]
A live album by this master of drone composed of 4 ~16 minute tracks, each pieced together individually from innumerable live performances. That is, a live album made up of new tracks made from live recordings. Brilliant.
Ilhan Ersahin - Ilhan Ersahin's Istanbul Sessions With Erik Truffaz [Nublu]
This is rad! Really accessible yet interesting ethno-jazz without too much cliche. Fun and groovy.
Freelance Whales - Weathervanes [Frenchkiss]
It's hearing a structurally complex album like this that features such seemingly effortless songwriting that reminds me how interesting and exciting indie-pop can still be!
Flight - Flight [Kill Shaman]
Unabashed pop tunes buried under dirt and grime. Blank Dogs without the spook-factor? And phaser.
Ty Segall & Mikal Cronin - Reverse Shark Attack [Kill Shaman]
2 Orange County native sons, each quite successful in their own garagetastic ways, unite for this pretty raucous...thing.
Uphill Gardeners - Uphill Gardeners [Kill Shaman/olFactory]
A 90s underground LA-based no-wave band featuring perhaps most notably Bobb Bruno, he of bunny-suit solo adventures and the man who has made Best Coast the beast it is today. Really excellent unreleased stuff that sounds fresh more than a decade later. Think...the first Liars album without the funk. Maybe.
Bipolar Bear/Hiroshima Rocks Around - Split LP [Kill Shaman/No=Fi]
Bipolar Bear - Harlem Pripyat [Mexican Summer]
Two here from LA scene vets Bipolar Bear, whom I believe a member of is responsible for Kill Shaman. They are eternally no-wave, negative energy, bass heavy, fuzz central. The former features a side by an Italian band with a similar ethos.
