The Tallest Man On Earth - Shallow Grave [Gravitation]
A fresh-faced Swede (are there any other kinds?) tackles the folk music of Dylan and Harry Smith's Anthology series. The picking is loud and the voice is earnest and the music is remarkably real. Sweden is probably the most excellent place to grow up in the whole of the world.
Chairlift - Does You Inspire You [Kanine]
Trip-hoppy indie weirdness from (obviously) Brooklyn. Apparently these kids have a song on an in-rotation Apple ad. The sound is subdued and melancholic but shot with light and beats. Sort of like Joy Division but taking into consideration that it is 2008 and the 28 years that have transpired. What? Portishead. Huh? What is music?
Drew Dansburry - This Could Mean Trouble, You Don't Speak For The Club [Emergency Umbrella]
Cute and hooky poppers from a sometimes-Orange County dweller. Lots of layers of tunecake. A happy soul with guitar in hand. YayyyyyYYYYYYYYyyy
A. R. Rahman - Slumdog Millionaire OST [Interscope]
So I haven't seen this Oscar-contender yet but here is the soundtrack. It is filled with Indian jams. And M.I.A.'s summer scorcher "Paper Planes." Don't play "Paper Planes" or M.I.A. in general as she is no longer KUCI friendly.
Guitar - Saltykisses [Clairecords]
I added an album by this band a few weeks ago and it seemed pretty well-received. Real big wall-of-sound type dream-gaze-pop. Pretty girl and sometimes boy vox and a lot of shimmering soft explosions.
The Soft Hands - Hours Pass By [Fidotrust]
Local label release of some totally Brainiac/Les Savy Fav/etc. inspired blitzkriegers. Lots of angular guitar swordplay on top of thunderrhythm. Which is apparently not a misspelled word.
Jack O' The Clock - Rare Weather [Self-Released]
This is really cool. Long and weird folk with a lot of ambiance and character. Requires a little commitment on the part of the DJ as per its length but definitely interesting.
Plastic Crimewave Sound - Plastic Crimewave Sound [Prophase]
Total psych-rock blisters with no attention paid to smoothing out edges. Raw and unhinged, like an angrier Brian Jonestown Massacre, maybe?

X-mas the garage rock way. Pure and simple.
