How are you? I am tired. I spent a loooooooooong time doing adds today. Last week was invigorating. This week will probably be the opposite of that: gnitarogivni. Onto the jams:
No Age - Nouns [Sub Pop]
LA punks bring their A-game to a basically major label as far as KUCI is considered. My face is in the photobook inside the digipak and I am wholly narcissistic, which is why I am adding this.
Boris - Smile [Southern Lord]
For a band that specializes in alternately crushing you with heavy, sustained notes and breaking your face with blister-busting, crippling riffs, Boris' last three album titles are a little misleading: "Pink," "Rainbow," and now, "Smile." This is the same Boris you have loved forever, bringing the rock and the roll to you from Japan and ripping you apart in the best way possible.
Koenjihyakkei - Hundred Sights of Koenji [Skin Graft]
Between finishing the last blurb and before I starting this one, I read about weird prog-rock for about 20 minutes. The first time I heard this band, I was totally frightened because it is such incredibly IN YOUR FACE music. That was a different album though. This is a reissue of their first album, which is more rock and roll and less nonsesne but it is still pretty wild prog wildness. Led by the drummerdude from RUINS. Also Japanese. Also awesome. MAGMA fans unite.
Tim Fite - Fair Ain't Fair [Anti-]
I listened to this a bit and it sounded really interesting. It fit the "NEW WEIRD AMERICA" tag that you may see on the internet to a tee, more than all those artists often grouped into that 'genre.' He sounds like he is emerging from the American folk tradition (think the Harry Smith anthologies), but he also swears and is weird.
The Long Blondes - Couples [Rough Trade]
I am starting to fall asleep but I will soldier through. This band's first record was criminally underlooked at KUCI. This new album is more of what made the last so good but with more synthesizers. Lots of hooks, confident vox, and beatz.
Russian Circles - Station [Suicide Squeeze]
HEAVY LOUD INSTRUMENTAL EPIC VIRTUOSITY POST ROCK!!!!
When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth - Not Noiice [Chalk Circle]
This sounds like those early Touch & Go bands. Noisy, no-wavey, harsh punk exlposions. I don't add a lot of stuff like this, because it doesn't seem like it gets spun as much. PROVE ME WRONG.
Princeton - Bloomsbury [Self-Released]
What's this? Sam is adding a pretty, solid pop album that is cutely self-released by a couple innocent and darling 20somethings probably still in college? WHAT?
Santogold - Santogold [Downtown]
I thought this was going to sound like M.I.A. but I was wrong and presumptuous. It is sort of all over the place. The sticker says Yeah Yeah Yeahs AND M.I.A. which I don't think is too off the mark.
Earles and Jensen Present - Just Farr A Laugh Vols. 1 & 2 [Matador]
This...is a comedy record. Of prank phone calls. On Matador records. It's pretty funny, plus when was the last time we had a COMEDY add? Check it. It's under "New Spoken Word." I'd play the first track maybe.
