New in the KUCI Music Library / April 22, 2008
April 22, 2008
by: Sam Farzin, KUCI Music Director

HELLO KYUCEE

This weekend I saw AKRON/FAMILY at Pitzer College. Pitzer College is wacky. They have a wall painting of two (2) dragons fighting in a sky-arena. One dragon is blue and one is green. Akron/Family is probably the best live band in the universe.

Bad Dudes, Health, Don Cavalli (whom I also saw the previous night at the ECHO CURIO in Los Angeles), and Rafter also played. They killed it mostly. There was no one there, except for like some hip(pie)sters and babies. I ate cotton candy and snow cones. Kyle had beer.

On Sunday I tried to see NO AGE at the LA Central Public Library. I failed because it was already packed when I got there. The eeeeeeeeend.

Check out those new KUCI program guides! They are fly!

rADDS:
Animal Collective - Water Curses [Domino]
Four squishy sparkly new jams from your favorite cuddly creatures who also know how to play music.

Pattern Is Movement - All Together [Hometapes]
Two beardy guys who make really interesting indierocks. RIYL: Dirty Projectors and Frog Eyes sounds sort of right, as the sticker says. These are bouncypants songs, with fresh sounding vox and structure that flutters around. You'll be hearing about this record for the rest of the year on all "the blogs" probably, but it's deserved.

Shout Out Louds - Impossible EP [Merge]
A new song + a "remake" + a "remix." Their last full-length was loved in KUCIland and so here is this little baby music disc.

Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight [Fatcat]
Scottish-bred melancho-pop. The USA release of their first record was just a few months ago and you guys also played that one (because it was good) so here is their new (second) record.

The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age of The Understatement [Domino]
This is a side project of Alex Turner of Cold-climated Places Primates* fame. It sounds a lot like that band, which isn't a bad thing at all.

Fol Chen - Fol Chen Make The Orange Sound [Self-Released]
The one-sheet with this CD made it sound like the second coming, which it is not. It is fun glitchy music with female singsonging and lots of room for sounds to breath. Worth checking out.

Them, Roaring Twenties - Future Sandwich [Sick Room]
Do you like Giraffes? Giraffes! (I just wrote Gorillas? by accident first)? Then there's a strong possibility you will like this. Sometimes it has vocals and when it does it is not as good (from my brief listen, albeit) but the music is fast and mathy and rock and rolling.

BlackBlack - EP 1 + EP 2 [Self-Released]
This wonderful Los Angeles-based band graciously gave me their two EPs to add to the station. As the CDs each came in hand-decorated sleeves, I felt it would be in poor taste to chop them up and stick in jewel cases for KUCI. So I made it easy for everyone and put both EPs together onto one CD-R (the discs they were selling were CD-Rs anyway). This band plays sometimes cute sometimes less cute female-fronted poppy dissonance. The guitar roars as much as it yelps like a baby puppy or rhino. Strongly recommendeddddd!!!

Various Artists - Trust Us (A Long Beach Comp) [Fidotrust]
A very well put-together compilation of Long Beach area bands. Has a great little booklet and a weird awesome CD-case. dios (malos) is on this, as are the soft hands, etc. etc.

OKAY.
that's all.
love,
SAM
