Enfants musicaux!

I just ate a loaf of ciabatta from Trader Joe's with spicy hummus. It was delicious. I was counting on getting some water from the lobby water dispenser but we are you of water! Damn you, waterman!

Last night I played Settlers of Catan. If you have not heard of this board game, I suggest you look into it. It was my fourth time playing, I think. In the game, you are a pioneer (re: "Settlers") of a fictional land (re: "Catan") and you have to build settlements and roads with resources you collect via dice rolls and you can trade and it's a lot of fun but I always lose and it sucks but I want to play again.

I want to see "There Will Be Blood" again.

There were a lot of records in the mail this week. This is a respectable cross-section, with many-a-genre represented!

Rings - Black Habit [Paw Tracks]
This band opened a string of dates for Animal Collective in 2006; they were then called First Nation. If Animal Collective were girls, they would be this band. Apparently, one of the members has left and been replaced by Avey Tare's sister, reinforcing the AC connection. I remember when I saw them, I was sort of mesmerized by their killer harmonies (basically their set consisted of a lot of "Ooooohh"s and "Aahhahhhs"), but it seemed like the crowd hated it. Anyway, I am listening to this right not and it is blowing my mind. Definitely skews experimental, but we'll ignore that. If you like me play this. I recommend "Is He Handsome" (track 3).

White Blue Yellow & Clouds - Introducing... [I & Ear]
This CD could soundtrack Johnny Rocket's. Oh man I want a cheeseburger. Basically this disc is full of 50s-type rocknroll/rnb doowop and reverb-soaked harmonies. A couple Beach Boys covers thrown in along with a bunch of originals. This band really gets the sound down, stunningly accurately.

Tender Forever - Wider [K]
This is like The Blow, but the singer has an accent.

Giraffes? Giraffes! - More Skin With Milk-Mouth [Loves In Heat]
MATH ROCK!!!!

The Battle Royale - Wake Up, Thunderbabe [Afternoon]
These guys put out a disc last year that was okay. This one is a lot better. The first half is dance-electro jams, and then tracks 7-11 are folkier numbers. Go teenagers!!

Liam Finn - I'll Be Lightning [Yep Roc]
As I understand it, this guy is a Kiwi Jon Brion: singer-songwriter who does everything himself, on record and onstage. Beatles (and Elliott Smith) comparisons pour in.

King Of Prussia - Save The Scene [Kindercore]
Hxc lightly orchestral indiepop from Athens, Ga. I thought that this was going to be another cookie cutter indie band but the songs are real solid.

So let's see: tribal folk-pop, math rock, electro-pop, indiepop, etc. etc. We are okay!

OKAY SO
