We have WAY too many solid adds this week. An upsetting amount of good adds. Why is this upsetting? Because I just worked eight hours, and I need to get this done before I can go to Wingstop for dinner, and then a management meeting. Oh man. Too much stuff. I may phone this one in. Wait. What’s that ringing? Oh yeah. That’s me hella-phoning this in. Boom.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Some Loud Thunder (Self-released)
Remember when these dudes came out of nowhere and totally destroyed your mind with butt-shaking music that sounded like the bastard child of Pavement? Yeah. They put out a new album that’s less energetic. Peep game, son.
Fujiya & Miyagi – Transparent Things (Deaf Dumb + Blind Communications)
This is entirely “teh [sic] new hotness”. Mellow electro-boogie-rock. From England. You know who else is from England? British Jesus. THAT IS A TRUE STATEMENT.
Hella – There’s No 666 in Outer Space (Ipecac)
So, this duo broke up a bit ago, and then immediately reformed as a five-piece with a singer. It’s a lot like that scene near the end of T2 where the T1000 gets all frozen and blown up and then comes back. That has our governor in it. Also: Hella sort of sounds way different now. They now sound like a mix of Hella and the Mars Volta (when they didn’t suck as bad). Also, they have a vocalist now. He uses words to convey lyrics. It’s pretty revolutionary.
Of Montreal – Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? (Polyvinyl)
Promise: You will be irritated whenever you take this CD out of it’s unnecessarily ornate packaging. These dudes keep on the same vaudeville-cum-electropop sojourn they started on with their album “Sunlandic Twins”. Some people are super geeked with their new direction, some hate it. Why don’t you listen to it and make up your owned damned mind. What’s your problem? Don’t know what to think if Rush Limbaugh doesn’t say it first? Huh, dad?
Deerhoof – Friend Opportunity (Kill Rock Stars)
These kids from SF decide to keep up the streak of being dangerously cute and cutely dangerous at the same time. If Deerhoof was a person, they MIGHT bite your ear off while you were making out. Probably not, though. Japanese female vocals over angular indie (now with 34% added accessibility).
Arab Strap – Ten Years of Tears (Chemikal Underground)
Arab Strap is about 1000000 times more depressing than any emo band could ever hope to be. A friend of mine once described them as getting an old, blue-collared Scotsman really drunk, and having him tell you about the time his entire family died in a fire that was set by all of his ex-girlfriends. These dudes are crazy drunk. Crazy sad. Crazy Scottish. Crazy broken up and now releasing a crazy career retrospective of demos, unreleased stuff, etc. I saw Arab Strap open for Bright Eyes, and the lead singer stumbled into their drum machine, causing the song to stop, and he swore a lot, and they redid the song. There’s a lot of profanity on this album. Goooooooo ARAB STRAP!
Sondre Lerche – Phantom Punch (Astralwerks)
“Hey ladies. I got big ol’ eyes and am cutely foreign. Set your vaginas to moist.” I have a feeling that’s going to be censored out for the website, and my feminist friends are gonna be pisssssssssed. It’s upbeat, fun, world-y pop. That’s gonna look like such a weird blurb when the rest of that gets cut out, huh? (Editor’s note: There’s nothing offensive about a moist vagina, Kyle, but it’s nice to know you appreciate my work.)
Beirut – Lon Gisland (Ba Da Bing)
That’s the actual name of the album, and not a typo. Mr. Condon is still rockin’ the Balkan gypsy-pop. Great songwriting on this lil’ EP with unique music. New Mexico, reprazent!
Big Sir - Und Die Scheiße Ändert Sich Immer (GSL)
A label normally known for vitriolic dance-art-punk puts out a somber electro-pop, radio-friendly, female-fronted sugar machine. Hip-hopish fused with electro-rock. Real chill. Don’t ask me how to pronounce this.
The Early Years – The Early Years (Beggars Banquet)
This dude loves guitars and bands like Mogwai, Spiritualized, Volvet Underground, etc. Pretty, hazy, multiple-effects-pedal-having rock music. Check it, dizoggs.
Urban Legends – Of Old Lost Days (Contraphonic)
You know how you like the Thermals and their unique blend of snotty garage-pop? What if I told you that this was the dude from the Thermals old band and that it sounded a lot like the Thermals? Would that get you all excited? Tight.
Alexander Tucker – Furrowed Brow (ATP)
Souds a LOT like Jackie-O Motherfucker. Really spacey, mellow post-experi-folk. I just made that up. I win.
Vandervelde – The Moonstation House Band (Secretly Canadian)
The label compares it to T. Rex, David Bowie and the Bee Gees. Intrigued? Oh yeah!
The Faintest Ideas – What Goes Up Must Calm Down (Magic Marker)
