Jeff Rosenstock - We Cool? - [SideOneDummy Records]
Jeff Rosenstock is a Punk Rock solo musician from Brooklyn, NY. His new album We Cool?, which was just released courtesy of SideOneDummy Records, is a really awesome and unique record that incorporates a lot of different genres of music into it such as Punk Rock, Emo, Folk Punk, Indie, and Rock and Roll. With that being said, there are still a few common elements that this album can be characterized by such as its upbeat drumming, distorted guitars, thick bass lines, and angst filled vocals, which remind the listener of the music that is played by a few very well-known Punk Rock bands (especially ‘90s Fat Wreck Chords bands) such as: The Lawrence Arms, Swingin’ Utters, and Lagwagon. The listener can also compare Jeff’s sound to bands like The Get Up Kids, Joyce Manor, and Weezer. Tracks to definitely check out on this album include: “Get Old Forever,” “You, In Weird Cities,” “I'm Serious, I'm Sorry,” and “Hey Allison!”
In The Whale - Nate N' Eric - [Self Released]
In The Whale is a 2 piece Punk Rock/Alternative Rock band from Denver, CO. Their new album Nate N’ Eric, which is actually a compilation album that is made up of two of the band’s previously released EPs; one entitled “Eric,” and the other subsequently entitled “Nate,” is a really awesome record that fans of all different types of music can most certainly enjoy. While keeping things pretty simple, In The Whale are still able to distinguish themselves from a lot of the up and coming Punk/Alternative Rock groups on the scene right now because of the raw energy they put into each and every one of their songs. If you are a fan of The White Stripes, The Thermals, Rage Against The Machine, Girl Tears, or any combination of the 4, I think that you will really like this album. Tracks to definitely check out on this record include: “Lake Of Fire,” “Grandpa Pete,” and “Girlfriend.”
Torche - Restarter - [Relapse Records]
Torche is a Sludge Metal band with Punk Rock sensibilities from Miami, FL. Their new album Restarter is a very interesting record that mixes the heavy, loud, and dreary elements of Sludge Metal with the upbeat, melodic, raw, and angsty elements of Punk Rock. While Troche is typically known for their Sludge Metal/Stoner Rock sound that can be compared to the likes of many other well-known bands such as Queens Of The Stone Age, Kyuss, and Chevelle, they have as of late been experimenting with more of a poppy/upbeat sound that has garnered the support of both Metal and Punk Rock fans alike. If you’re looking for something upbeat that has more a thick/bassy/heavy sound to it, I think that you will really like this album. Tracks to definitely check out on this record include: “Bishop in Arms,” “Minions,” “Loose Men,” and “Blasted.” ?
Destruction Unit - Live In San Francisco - [Castle Face Records]
Destruction Unit is a Punk Rock/Noise Rock band from Arizona. Their new live album Live In San Francisco is a really awesome record that truly showcases the sheer power of Destruction Unit’s sound, which can be simply described as LOUD NOISE. Characterized by loud and fuzzed out guitars, pounding drums, and groovy baselines, the sounds heard on this album are very similar to those heard by bands like The Dead Kennedy’s and Black Flag (Henry Rollins era). Throughout the live performance that this record captures, the band takes a lot of time to improvise/solo and make use of numerous special effects that remind me a lot of some of the stuff Sonic Youth does while they are on stage. Tracks to definitely check out this album include: “Slow Death Sounds,” and “Bumpy Road.”
