World Psychedelic Classics 4 : The Existential Soul of Tim Maia : Nobody Can Live Forever – (Luaka Bop)
Luaka Bop celebrates what would have been the 70th birthday of Tim Maia by reissuing and remastering his music from the 70's. Tracks in Portuguese and English, he got pretty deep after visiting the States and witnessing the civil rights movement, some say he revolutionized the 70's pop music in Brazil. What a character though, check it: first band at age 14 teaching gang members guitar, age 17 illegal emigration to New York studying communications while working as a janitor, age 21 jailed for smoking marijuana in a stolen car, and deported back where he wrote the songs you are hearing on World Psych 4. Whooooooha.

Menahan Street Band - The Crossing - Dunham Records (Daptone's Imprint label)
You know them as the backing band for Charles Bradley's "No Time For Dreaming", here comes the sophmore album from Brooklyn based MSB!!! 5 members, Thomas Brenneck (guitarist/co-founder), Homer Steinweiss (drummer, co-founder), Nick Movshon (bassist), Dave Guy (trumpeter), and Leon Michels (tenor saxophonist). All used to be Dap-Kings, Brenneck is in Budos Band, Michels from El Michel's Affair. This album's crispy crunchiness was all recorded at Dunham Sound Studios, which is an all analog studio that Brenneck & Steinwess built "which was funded by a royalty check they received after Jay-Z sampled the title track of Make The Road By Walking for his 2007 hit, “Roc Boys (And the Winner Is…)”. YEAH!

Cody Chestnutt - Landing on a Hundred
It's been a decade since Cody Chestnutt has released something, and he went about it just like anybody else trying to make it...a Kickstarter campaign. Raising 22,362 after recording the music, the goal was to get the music out to the world. It's a feel good listen, his vocals are pleasant, although lyrics could be a bit more subtle...example: track 6: ""I used to smoke crack back in the day.....now I teach Sunday school..." All the songs sound kinda the same to me. Good melodies, nice tones, at least Cody sounds like Cody and not imitating anybody else.

Juma Sultan's Aboriginal Music Society - Whispers From The Archive - Porter Records)
Juma Sultan is an percussionist who is known for playing with Jimi Hendrix during Woodstock 1969. This album features recordings from Sultan's archives, which span from the late 60's through the 70's. Lots of hand drums & percussion in the style of African music, spiritual/free jazz and some soulful, funky grooves too. Maybe back then it wasn't as appreciated as it could be now with a wider, more open minded audience.
