The Intelligence - Everybody’s Got It Easy But Me – (Planetary)
Main dude, Lars Finberg, currently of Thee Oh Sees and Wounded Lion, is working his magic in this new band. It’s not quite garage rock, it’s mid-fi music that can be enjoyed most while buzzed. Catchy songs you can bop your head to. Can be enjoyed while scraping against sweaty shoulders in the front row with an audience that is too shy to start a pit. It’s happy music for sad lives, the kind of stuff the designated driver likes to hear in his sober state.
Cosmonauts - Cosmonauts – (Burger Records)
Total garage rock, in your face, drunk new years eve party. It’s push me music, get out of the basement and go to one of their shows with someone you met on the internet, and realizing there is life, oh...there is life, it is called lo-fi, can’t understand what you are singing but who cares this music is catchy as heck kind of stuff.
Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do – (Epic)
This gal’s voice is quite unique, like she was gifted with vocal cords who can put any baby to sleep, and arouse any man at the same time. Rebellious folk with an indie twist, to be enjoyed while hostel hopping, trying to figure out how different people live in different cities. Lovely and effortless, hitchhiking thinker music.
Beachwood Sparks - The Tarnished Gold – (Sub Pop)
This is the music you listen to when you are dreaming about bubbles and trees much much taller than you. These hippies are madly in love with life and living it. To be enjoyed while driving to Yosemite National Park or while having a backpacking trip with your closest friends, being confused for lumberjacks and laughing about it around the campfire. Lots of joyful waves meant to make people smile.
Mixtapes - Even on the Worst Nights – (Planetary)
Post Punk pop nostalgic tunes about living in the suburbs and reminiscing on childhood memories, realizing you don’t know what the heck to do with your life. It is for all those teenagers who are just now discovering who they really are and what they want out of life, sort of angry at the world but also confused so let’s just go to the backyard and play a show for all our teenage friends who feel the same way.
Jeans Wilder - Totally – (Ever Loving)
Distorted, mellow lo-fi, shoe gazey sound. Definitely some jams for a simple summer night. It's high school and you're at your friend's bedroom at their parent's house and it's warm outside, so the window is open. Both of you are laying on the floor just chilling out to these certain sounds. you're feeling super content and you are both quiet, just soaking up the sounds and the night. he did a split with best coast, if you're into that.
Tomten - Wednesday's Children – (Flat Field Records)
Listen to this album and you're sold: life is easy. So is listening to this man strum on his electric guitar and sing. definitely a light romantic, dreamy element to this. Self released album. You can totally picture these three kids having a good time together, rocking out on stage, playing some local shows. enjoying the organ. support from kexp in seattle.
Giant Sand - Tucson – (Fire Records)
Alternative country pop for ya, associated with calexico. Love this sound. I hope we do everything howe gelb is describing us doing, foreverness. I'm all ears to what he has to say. Where are we even? Everyone is kind here, everyone is interesting. it's either day or night and i'm swaying or dancing to this, singing along. i'm all ears. With some jazzy and folky elements.
Wintersleep – (Hello Hum
Ooh canada. more specifically, Nova Scotia. Oowee, if that doesn't already paint a picture for you. Punchy drums and high spirited melodies carry you through with floating vocals, guitar solos. one moment i am stuck on the vocals and I feel it in my heart. It breaks into a guitar solo and I'm feeling it in my feet. The melody kicks back in and i'm soaring with a melancholy lightness in my heart again.
Tic Tic Boom! - Before the Sun Rises – (Self Released)
not to be confused with the musical, the card game, nor the hives song.. la synth rockers tic tic boom has that fun synth, female vocal dance floor feel. a bit of teenage heartbreak/angst noted in the lyrics. the album ends in a different dimension feel, wooowopp.
Niki and the Dove - Instinct – (Sub Pop) )
Catchy dancey pop GOODNESS in a non obnoxious way. Oh everyone will play this on their show. valerie helped me add this one :). Check out the goldroom remix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKdcj8cv75k Pretty sure this got more than one play on my show which is kind of not a common happening.
