Tanlines - Mixed Emotions – (True Panther Sounds)
Spring Break-ready all fun in the sun 80s inspired Sunny Beats-style hit after hit infectious inescapable two-dudes synth pop. Apparently Nokia makes phones that make you itch when you get a call as a ringtone. This Tanlines album is kind of like really catchy ringtone pop that just scratches those itches you can never seem to be able to reach because of your lack of flexibility or the limitations of the human body.
Lee Ranaldo - Between The Times & The Tides – (Matador)
Eternal babe and the chip-on-his-shoulder singer of Sonic Youth's new album is a total melancholic return to 90s indie rock sounds that sort of parallels Thurston's recent effort (they are true soul mates). Lee's getting in touch with his sensitive, kinda Neil Youngy, side and the results are in: he has tested positive for making choice no-nonsense singer songwriter style jams.
Daniel Rossen - Silent Hour/Golden Mile – (Warp)
Everyone's secret favorite member of Grizzly Bear has a new solo EP of his unique brand of angelic, consuming, thoughtful, and haunting country-folk that outshines some of his work on Yellow House and Horn Of Plenty.
TOPS - Tender Opposites – (Arbutus)
I recently watched the Miranda July film The Future, which I'll probably reference in a future review, and it turned out to be one of the most brutally honest and depressing movies I've seen. Ms. July broke my heart, and there was a Beach House song in the already great soundtrack put together by Jon Brion. Ironically, Beach House is a controversial band because of their complexity (or lack there-of according to the opposing side). Within context, the song was perfect at capturing the purposed and necessary awkwardness and in-concreteness of the mood that the movie portrays. TOPS have a new hazy ambiguous pop album that resembles some of these sentiments that are to be enjoyed within context.

Hush Arbors/Arbouretum - Aureola – (Thrill Jockey)
Proggy stereo-melting grounded and organic psych-folk split. Hush Arbors are more on the lighter side, and Arbouretum are more on the heavy side. The choice is yours!
