The Field - Looping State Of Mind – (Kompakt)
On his last record, The Field recorded a cover of Beck's Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime which leaves out what I take to be the best part of the song, that is, the part of the song which mentions the title. While a solid album, there was something missing which barred me from listening to the album to death like I did for his debut. Moving both forwards and backwards and in itself (hehe), Looping State Of Mind fills in the emotional gaps, resulting in a return to the sentimentality and nostalgia of his debut while adopting the maximalism of his previous. It's pure organic celestial immensive 4/4-4-life loop-centric techno-pop, continuing a discography defined by a unique inventive, affective, and multilaterally self-reflexive approach to writing electronica.
Zola Jesus - Conatus – (Sacred Bones)
Moving past her limiting lo-fi synth based goth-pop, Zola Jesus moves toward a more polished and focused industrial goth-disco sound which showcases an operatic razorblade-to-wrist emotionalism inherent to her vocal performance. It's her most cohesive and accessible set of club-ready hits.
The Rapture - In The Grace Of Your Love – (DFA)
So the world did not end on May 21st 2011. The good did not rise up to the heavens and the heathens did not get swallowed by the dark prince's charm into the fiery depths of the unholy abyss. Fortunately, Harold Camping proposed a new projected date, October 21st 2011. At the same time, the bar-codes imbedded into our foreheads during child birth means we're all done for. Guess all we can do is celebrate by listening to the Rapture's newest anthemic bun burning disco-punk.
Prince Rama - Trust Now – (Paw Tracks)
Highly not inconspicuous legends of the hidden temple style mystical eastern influenced psychedelic groovy seance zoning. It's like disco meets your Ouiji board meets your favorite tumblr.
My Brightest Diamond - All Things Will Unwind – (Asthmatic Kitty)
Ornate and baroque renaissance string-heavy fancy pants whimsical art-pop with a dominant vocal presence. What does chamber pop mean anyway?
Crooked Fingers - Breaks In The Armor – (Merge)
Country tinged folky 90's style indie rock by former lead singer from seminal band Archers Of Loaf. I'm actually into this more than I am into Archers Of Loaf, who we got a fantastic reissue for last month. Solid song writing, super catchy and not cheesy at all.
Soley - We Sink – (Morr Music)
Icelandic delicate and whimsical cat lady like ornate folk-pop from a member of Seabear. Another testament to the fact that Iceland is the most serene, contemplative and sensitive place in the world.
Casiokids - Aabenbaringen Over Aaskammen – (Polyvinyl)
Care-free Norwegian tropical nostalgia soaked psychedelic disco-pop. Cruise-controling into a beachy sunsetty sandy death.
We Were Promised Jet Packs - In The Pit Of The Stomach – (Fat Cat)
Aggressive yet sentimental and melancholic post-punky emotive atmospheric indie rock with a lot of sensitive post rock type moments.
